Glossary of Terms

Unlike most 'Glossary of Terms' found in printed literature the purpose of this is to re-enforce the terms in general use in the world of Datacast. Like most new technologies, the terms used become all too familiar with people who deal with them every day. While it is easy to forget that 'outside' of our world people find it difficult to understand. Should you find, in our pages terms/references of items you find difficult to understand, we will be only to please to assist, by contacting us in the usual manner.

Vertical Blanking Interval or VBI - The first 22 lines of a television frame in which the data is inserted

World System Teletext or WST - The dominant world system for teletext insertion

Insertion The way the data is placed within the VBI Service

Provider - An independent supplier of all aspects relating to a Datacast service

Broadcaster - The company who provides the means by which the data is delivered

Air-time Provider - The company who provides transmission time to the Service Provider

End User - Any individual or company who subscribe to a service or provide their own service via datacast

Content Provider - The company that provides the content data to the Service Provider

System Integrator - Employed by the Service Provider to 'set up' the service prior to use

Real-time - Transmitted data which is received and decoded almost instantaneously for use by the end user (This definition is as defined by AX4A)

Subscriber Management System or SMS - The system for controlling the unique addresses of the AX4A decoders. Each data service can be enabled remotely and reception can be separately turned on or off.
