The system
The Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) standard for digital TV, has been designed to carry video, audio and data. At low level, these are all MPEG-2 data streams being broadcast in parallel to the end-users. In case of satellite, all end-users located within the satellite footprint will receive the data contemporaneously. With a DVB compliant satellite receiver the data is received on either a PC or TV. The DVB standard was developed to carry also Internet Protocol (IP) traffic.
Benefits
Like with TV broadcast, each user can select totally independent of each other an IP data stream with their satellite receiver. Because of the nature of broadcast, everyone can enjoy a direct and non-interrupted stream of data, totally independent of others accessing the same information at the same time. For Data Vendors, this is an ideal system to broadcast real-time data to many users at the same time, without degradation of the quality of the service.
